Bob Fosse’s semi-autobiographical musical followed Roy Scheider’s Joe Gideon, a choreographer-director burning himself out as he bounces between staging a Broadway show, cutting a movie, and ignoring every doctor who tells him to slow down. The film turns his burnout and heart surgery into full-blown fantasy numbers, with death watching from the wings and a glittery farewell instead of a quiet fade-out. It went on to win the Palme d’Or at Cannes, pick up four Oscars, and cement itself as the wild, nerve-frayed cousin to every backstage musical that came after.

As I have learned while writing this, if you do a search for Fleetwood Mac images, 99.97% of the results are of Stevie Nicks. Yet there was an era before Stevie (and Lindsey Buckingham, but c'mon) was even in the band.
