Retro Rewind: On This Day

56 years ago TODAY, one Saturn V liftoff kicked off the moon mission that would make “Houston, we’ve had a problem” part of the language when Apollo 13 launched in 1970!

Jim Lovell, Fred Haise, and Jack Swigert blasted off from Kennedy Space Center on what was supposed to be NASA’s third lunar landing, headed for the Fra Mauro region. Two days later, an oxygen tank explosion killed the landing plan and turned the mission into a life-or-death loop around the moon, but that’s exactly why Apollo 13 stuck. It splashed down safely on April 17 and turned a near-disaster into NASA’s most famous “successful failure.”
