32 years ago TODAY, one very determined stage mom dragged vaudeville back into the spotlight when CBS aired its adaptation of "Gypsy" with Bette Midler in 1993!
The film cast Midler as Rose Hovick, forever chasing a dream that keeps slipping from child-star June to quieter Louise, who eventually remade herself as Gypsy Rose Lee when the vaudeville circuit started to fade. The TV movie kept the full Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim songbook, staging "Everything’s Coming Up Roses," "You Gotta Get a Gimmick," and "Rose’s Turn" for living-room audiences, and its CBS broadcast pulled in more than 26 million viewers, earning Midler a Golden Globe for Best Actress and a stack of Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for the production.
