36 years ago TODAY, a low-budget holiday special quietly launched "The Simpsons" as a full series when it premiered on Fox in 1989!

After three seasons of sketches on "The Tracey Ullman Show," Fox gave "The Simpsons" a full half-hour time slot of its own. "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire" saw Homer take a secret mall Santa gig after Mr. Burns cut holiday bonuses, just as Marge blew the family's savings getting Bart’s ill-advised tattoo removed. It wasn’t meant to be the first episode, but animation problems meant the Christmas story that introduced the Simpsons to their new dog wound up being the episode that introduced "The Simpsons" to prime time.
