36 years ago TODAY, we all learned a raccoon tail was as good as a pilot’s license when Super Mario Bros. 3 was released in North America in 1990!

Mario’s third (and best) NES outing added the overworld map, new power-ups like the Super Leaf and Tanooki Suit, themed worlds, and the Koopalings. It went on to sell more than 17 million copies, becoming one of the best-selling NES games and one of the most acclaimed platformers of all time. It’s the 2D Mario high bar people still compare everything else to.

Sci-fi movies are very liberal with when they take place. Star Wars, for example, takes place at some vague point in time way in the past, while Star Trek is meant to be set in our own near-ish future. Whether it’s the past or the future, the point I’m getting to is that the present kind of sucks.
