Barbra Streisand was not only the star of the movie, but also the director, co-writer, and co-producer. She played Yentl Mendel, who posed as a young man named Anshel so she could sneak into a yeshiva and study with the guys, all while delivering power ballads like "Papa, Can You Hear Me?" and "The Way He Makes Me Feel." The film won the Oscar for its original score and Golden Globes for Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy and Best Director.
