37 years ago TODAY, Madonna lit the candles and made pop a lot more personal when she released her album “Like a Prayer” in the U.S. in 1989!

This was the album where she stopped sounding like she was just chasing hits and started sounding like she wanted to crack herself open in public, folding family drama, religion, sex, and heartbreak into songs like "Express Yourself," "Cherish," "Oh Father," and the title track.
