Winona Ryder’s Veronica starts out stuck in the Heather machine, then Christian Slater’s J.D. shows up and turns all that glossy 80s teen-movie polish into something meaner, darker, and way more quotable. It flopped in theaters, but it became the teen-movie cult classic every other dark high school movie gets compared to. It’s also the second Winona Ryder movie to become a musical, which isn’t a lot, but still weird that it happened twice.

Does anyone actually have a bar they go to where everybody knows their name and the same six or seven people are there ... every night?
