48 years ago TODAY, Showtime stopped being a California secret and went national when it got uplinked to satellite in 1978!

That one move turned it into a real premium-TV contender overnight, suddenly competing with HBO instead of just being a cool add-on in a few cable systems. And the chaos came fast.
