The film also featured James Earl Jones, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Rae Dawn Chong (who Howell married a few years later). The movie drew protests and boycotts, landed in the crosshairs of the blackface debate, and became a cautionary tale that made money at the time but aged like milk.
