But despite roughly half of us comparing it to sweet-tasting chalk, it continues to be a top seller in states like Utah, Kansas, and Ohio.

VHS ruled living rooms for over two decades, with those chunky plastic rectangles stacked like monuments to home entertainment in every household. Sure, rewinding was annoying and tracking was mystifying, but video stores were booming and people built impressive collections of their favorite films. Then DVDs showed up in 1996, promising crystal-clear picture quality and zero rewinding. In which year did DVD finally knock VHS off its throne and become the top-selling home video format?

45 years ago TODAY, diners headed “Above the Top” when “It’s a Living” premiered on ABC in 1980! The workplace sitcom followed a crew of high-rise waitresses trading quips and tips, with standouts like Ann Jillian, Barrie Youngfellow, Gail Edwards, Marian Mercer, and lounge pianist Paul Kreppel. After two ABC seasons (season two aired as “Making a Living”), the show pulled off a rare comeback in first-run syndication from 1985 to 1989. In syndication, it returned to the original title while adding Crystal Bernard and Sheryl Lee Ralph to the mix.

Here's a little view into what the world was like before the PG-13 rating existed: You could release a trailer for a movie that shows a super cute creature driving around in a Barbie car looking sweet, inspiring parents to bring their five-year-olds to see it, and then have them get traumatized when said cute creature spawns hundreds of evil, violent gremlins.
