I like to think I have a pretty good palate, but give me three different pieces of salami and I have no idea what notes I'm tasting for beyond salt and meat. Some delis are overflowing with tubes of what really just feels like mystery meat, ranging in price from "sure, why not" to "oh my god, why?" Don't get me wrong though, if I see it on a charcuterie board, I'll always make room for it on my plate.

Someone once convinced millions of Americans to buy a rock in a box. Not a magic rock. Not a rare rock. Just a regular rock, nestled in wood shavings, with a straight-faced instruction manual for "training" it. The joke worked precisely because it wasn't trying to be anything else. But when did this gloriously stupid idea hit stores?
