In "Misery," what's the name of Kathy Bates' character?

Annie Wilkes became the "number one fan" nobody wanted to meet. What starts as a rescue quickly turns into psychological torture when she discovers Paul has killed off her favorite character, and Bates transforms from sweet caregiver to sledgehammer-wielding maniac. Before the film hit theaters, Bates watched a screening and completely panicked, convinced she'd just nuked her career.
