After crashing in the Pacific, Tom Hanks’s character paints a face on the volleyball and talks to it for years like it’s a teammate. So when Wilson floats away during a storm, it hits harder than most human deaths in film. It's both deeply sad and weirdly charming, which kinda sums up the entire movie.
