39 years ago TODAY, a shape-shifting British comic turned early Fox into a sketch-comedy dress-up box when "The Tracey Ullman Show" premiered in 1987!

Tracey Ullman spent the show bouncing through accents, wigs, musical numbers, and sharp little character bits, giving the brand-new Fox network one of its first signatures while also accidentally helping launch "The Simpsons" through those early animated shorts. That weird, busy, anything-can-happen energy was the whole appeal, and the show ended up running four seasons while becoming Fox’s first primetime series to win an Emmy.
