43 years ago TODAY, a soft-spoken painter started turning blank canvases into happy little escapes when "The Joy of Painting" premiered on PBS in 1983!

Each episode, Bob Ross stood in front of a plain canvas and, in about half an hour, whispered his way from a few brushstrokes into full landscapes packed with happy little trees, mountains, and cabins you’d swear you could walk into.
