56 years ago TODAY, a sleepy Pennsylvania suburb turned into daytime TV’s favorite battlefield for secrets and schemes when "All My Children" premiered on ABC in 1970!

Set in the fictional town of Pine Valley, the soap followed families like the Martins and Chandlers, all slowly getting pulled into the orbit of Erica Kane, played by Susan Lucci, as careers, marriages, and grudges piled up over decades of lunch-hour viewing. Created by Agnes Nixon to mix social issues with messy romance, it became a ratings powerhouse, and Lucci’s legendary run as Erica finally earned her a long-awaited Daytime Emmy win in 1999.

There were a few influential films that helped anime take off in the West. Ghost in the Shell and Akira were two major ones, but basically all of Studio Ghibli's films made a splash in the West to some degree. To this day, even the most casual non-anime watcher has at least heard of one of Ghibli's movies, if not seen one without even realizing it was from Japan.
