In 1977 NASA bolted a gold-plated record to the side of Voyager 1 and shot it into the void with no return address. The disc carries greetings in 55 languages, whale songs, Bach, Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode," and the sound of a kiss, packaged with a turntable cartridge and pictogram instructions for whichever alien eventually pulls it out of the cosmic dust.

29 years ago TODAY, a beeping egg started demanding to be fed in the middle of math class when Tamagotchi launched in North America in 1997!

The pitch was simple. Hatch a digital pet on a keychain, then keep it alive by feeding it, cleaning up after it, and playing with it through three little buttons on the shell. Skip a feeding for too long, and you'd come back to a tiny grave on the screen, which is why kids smuggled them into class and why teachers started confiscating them by the dozen. Bandai sold more than 82 million of them worldwide.
