This is the second time this week we owe Teddy Roosevelt a thank you, since the teddy bear was invented in 1902 after he refused to shoot a bear on a hunting trip. Before stuffed bears became a thing people had to settle for hugging actual bears, which probably explains why the human population stayed pretty small for so long.

46 years ago TODAY, Bette Midler walked on screen like she’d been doing it forever when “The Rose” opened in 1979. Loosely inspired by the Janis Joplin myth (emphasis on loosely since the family didn't approve) without saying it out loud, it let her do the full burnout-rock-star arc, sing her face off, and earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress. The title song would go on to be one of her signature tracks.
