Star Trek predicted flip phones, tablets, and video calls decades before they became reality, and those communicator devices look suspiciously similar to what everyone was using in the early 2000s. The show also nailed earbuds and voice assistants, which makes you wonder if tech companies have just been working through a Star Trek checklist for the past 50 years. Either that or the writers had some serious time travel technology of their own.

59 & 52 years ago TODAY, we got to go where no man or animation had gone before when "Star Trek: The Original Series" and "Star Trek: The Animated Series" premiered on TV in 1966 and 1973, respectively! For a combined 101 episodes, we were taken aboard the USS Enterprise to see how Captain James T. Kirk and his crew traveled the galaxy! Debuting seven years after the original, the animated show was really just a continuation of the first show, with the ability to draw things that set design and costume teams couldn't build.

What sitcom star helped get Star Trek made?

There are so many shows in the Star Trek franchise that the original was officially renamed "Star Trek: The Original Series" (hitherto referred to simply as TOS). Yet those first three seasons didn’t go well, and "Star Trek" was canceled. It wasn’t until TOS was picked up and re-aired across the world in syndication that Gene Roddenberry’s vision was eagerly embraced by adoring fans. The rest, as they say, is history.
