Guess the TV show: "God'll get you for that, Walter"

Last updated: December 18, 2025

Half the fun of watching TV shows is waiting for the moment in each episode when a character drops their signature line. We're still quoting The Fonz's "Ayyy" from "Happy Days" 50 years later, and Joey Tribbiani's "How you doin'?" is still the opening line for many dates. Some catchphrases are equally memorable, but maybe a little too specific for everyday use. Which TV show had the catchphrase "God'll get you for that, Walter"?

Correct Answer: Maude

Bea Arthur made her debut as Maude Findlay on "All in the Family" in 1971, playing Edith's liberal, feminist cousin who made Archie Bunker's head explode just by existing. CBS president William S. Paley watched that episode and immediately called Norman Lear to tell him to get Arthur her own show. Smart move, because "Maude" became a massive hit when it premiered in 1972.

The show centered on Maude and her fourth husband Walter (yes, fourth), and the entire dynamic was built around Maude steamrolling over pretty much everything Walter said. Whenever he managed to land a decent joke at her expense, she'd shut him down with "God'll get you for that, Walter." The line came straight from Arthur herself, and it basically defined their entire marriage. Arthur won an Emmy in 1977, and if catchphrases could win an award, it probably would've won one too.
