The answer is: Police Academy. It shocks me every time I’m reminded how much of a cinematic powerhouse Police Academy was. The screwball comedy topped the box office for four out of the five measurable weeks of April 1984, only briefly interrupted by Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (spoiler: it wasn’t the final chapter). It went on to gross nearly $150 million against just a $4.5 million budget.
