The word Capcom has been synonymous with video games pretty much since they became a thing. The original company that would become Capcom, I.R.M. Corporation, was founded in Japan back in 1979. And when video-game fever took the world by storm in the early ‘80s, they were right there, producing classic games like 1942, Ghosts 'n Goblins, and Commando.

The answer is: Street Fighter 2. Street Fighter 2 was a runaway phenomenon for Capcom, generating over $1.5 billion in game sales for the company by 1993. The total revenues from the roughly 200,000 Street Fighter 2 arcade cabinets pulled in an estimated $2.3 billion by 1995. The Super Nintendo version of Street Fighter 2 sold over 6.3 million units, which makes it Capcom’s best-selling software title for a single title to date.
