What is the best-selling film series on VHS?

When VHS ruled home entertainment in the '80s and '90s, some movies became instant must-haves while others gathered dust on video store shelves. Individual blockbusters grabbed headlines for massive sales, but the real money was in getting families to buy direct-to-home sequels. Parents would purchase the original, then eagerly snatch up each sequel as soon as it hit stores, creating a franchise goldmine that completely bypassed theaters. Which film franchise became the VHS sales champion?
▼
Correct Answer: Aladdin
(Source)You know, I can't blame you if you picked "The Lion King." Not only is the first film the best-selling VHS movie of all time, but both "The Lion King II: Simba's Pride" and "The Lion King 1½" sold incredibly well too. However, by the time the third film was released in 2004, VHS was already a walking corpse, having been killed by shiny DVDs. Now compare that to the "Aladdin" trilogy, which started in 1992, continued with 1994's "The Return of Jafar" and finished with "Aladdin and the King of Thieves" in 1996. Considering VHS sales peaked in 1998, that meant that all three films got a ride on the VHS magic carpet to over 55 million tapes sold.
