Last updated: July 1, 2025

Blondie was tearing up CBGB with their punk attitude while Debbie Harry perfected that ice-cool stare that made everyone else look like they were trying too hard. After years of playing dingy clubs in New York's underground scene, they were experimenting with different styles and had their sights set on something bigger than cult status. What was Blondie's first number one hit in the United States?

Correct Answer: Heart of Glass

"Heart of Glass" launched Blondie from CBGB regulars to radio superstars in early 1979. The band had been tinkering with the song for years, originally calling it "Once I Had a Love" and playing it as a reggae-influenced track during their early club days. Producer Mike Chapman suggested a new disco beat, and despite fears of being called sell outs, they pressed ahead anyway. The gamble paid off when the song hit number one and camped out there for a month. The success was sweet revenge for a band that had been rejected by countless record labels, and proved that Blondie could master any genre they touched.
