What was the first song from "Thriller" to hit #1?

Michael Jackson had already conquered the world as part of the Jackson 5, then again with "Off the Wall," so by 1982 the pressure was on to prove he could keep delivering solo magic. "Thriller" went on to produce seven hit singles and turned Jackson into the undisputed King of Pop. Which song from "Thriller" was the first to top the Hot 100?
▼
Correct Answer: Billie Jean
(Source)Jackson had spent the previous months watching "The Girl Is Mine" stall at number two, which was exactly what Epic Records expected when they chose the McCartney collaboration as their safe opener. The label knew there were zero Black records in the pop Top 20 when "Thriller" came out, so they needed something radio-friendly to get Jackson back in the game. But Jackson's next single, "Billie Jean," hit radios with a beat that was impossible to ignore. It hit number one in March, 1983 stayed there for seven weeks, and made Jackson the first artist in music history to simultaneously top all four of Billboard's pop and R&B charts. It was the first time an uptempo urban song had conquered the pop charts in over two years. Once "Billie Jean" proved he could dominate on his own terms, there was no stopping the king.
