Last updated: December 31, 2025

"Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve" has been the countdown king for over three decades, and for many people, Dick Clark himself is synonymous with the ball drop in Times Square. It kinda felt like he'd be there forever, but eventually Clark joined forces with his younger competition. When did Ryan Seacrest start hosting "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve"?

Correct Answer: 2005

Nobody expected Clark to give up his spot easily. Even after his stroke in 2004 when Regis Philbin had to fill in for him, ABC was quick to announce Clark would be back next time with a new co-host. Over on Fox, Seacrest had been hosting the only real challenger to Clark's New Year's Eve special (and calling it a challenger is still a real stretch), so when ABC gave Seacrest the opportunity to jump ship and team up with Clark, he took it.

On December 31, 2005, Seacrest handled most of the hosting duties in Times Square while Clark made limited appearances from the studio. They continued co-hosting until Clark's death in 2012, and then Seacrest became the sole host. Thirteen years later, there's still no plan to rename the special from "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve." We didn't change the name of Times Square when the New York Times moved out, so I don't know why we'd change this either.
