Which animal shares the most DNA with humans?

Last updated: May 21, 2025

Our DNA blueprint shares surprising similarities with several species, from mice to bananas. While we share about 60% of our genes with chickens, some animals are much closer cousins on the family tree. Which animal carries the most matching DNA with humans?

Correct Answer: Bonobos (and Chimpanzees)

(Source)

Bonobos share 98.7% of their DNA with humans, making them our closest living relatives alongside chimpanzees. We split from these apes about 6 million years ago (how many "greats" before grandparent is that?) to climb to the top of the animal kingdom. But Chimps and Bonobos stayed in touch and still share 99.6% of their DNA. They're so similar that scientists didn't even realize they were different until 1929.
