Which film earned Cher her first Oscar nomination?

Cher's path from variety show star to respected actress wasn't exactly something people wanted to "Believe" in. While audiences loved her musical performances and witty TV banter with Sonny, Hollywood dismissed her as another singer playing dress-up. After her 1969 film "Chastity" flopped, even Cher wondered if they were right. Which performance in the 1980s finally made Oscar voters take her seriously?

Correct Answer: Silkwood
(Source)When a film stars Meryl Streep and is directed by Mike Nichols, Oscar nominations are basically guaranteed. But Cher grabbing a Best Supporting Actress nomination for playing Dolly Pelliker, the lesbian roommate of Karen Silkwood in the true-story drama "Silkwood" came as a shock to some. Nichols fought to cast her after seeing her off-Broadway in "Jimmy Dean," and as the king of from-stage-to-screen, I think he knew what he was talking about. While she ended up losing to Linda Hunt, Cher would be back on the red carpet four years later and win Best Actress for her role in "Moostruck."
