Which girl group released the first rap album to be certified gold?

Last updated: December 8, 2025

Hip-hop in the mid-1980s was still fighting for respect as a serious musical genre, and for female rappers the hill was even steeper. Male rappers dominated the scene, and the industry thought rap was just a passing fad that would burn out any day. One girl group grabbed the microphone and proved rap had staying power, and women deserved some of the spotlight. Which girl group had the first gold rap album?

Correct Answer: Salt-N-Pepa

Sometimes all an album needs is a single song to push it to history-making success. Cheryl "Salt" James and Sandra "Pepa" Denton released their debut album "Hot, Cool & Vicious" in December 1986, but it didn't even chart on the Billboard 200 until roughly nine months later. In between, a San Francisco DJ had randomly flipped over their single "Tramp" (remember when you needed to physically flip records?) and discovered the B-side "Push It." The song gave the album new life and it was rereleased to much better results. Salt later admitted they recorded the track in a bathroom for its echo effect and that they thought "Ooh baby baby" was the corniest thing ever. But people liked it, they liked it real good, and the album was certified gold in January 1988.
