When Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, and Francis Ford Coppola all walked on stage to present the Oscar for Best Director, you could already feel that everyone knew who was going to win. Scorsese had already won the Golden Globe, DGA, and Critics' Choice Award for directing "The Departed," and the crime thriller about undercover cops and mobsters infiltrating each other's organizations earned him the Best Director trophy at the 79th Academy Awards. Now, if 2007 sounds awfully recent for a director who's been working since the '60s, you'd be right. His first Oscar nomination was for "Raging Bull," and "The Departed" was his sixth nomination for directing. When he accepted the award from Spielberg, Lucas, and Coppola, Scorsese joked about his track record by asking the presenters to double-check the envelope.
