Linda Ronstadt went on to win 11 Grammys and become the best-selling female artist of the 1970s. But in 1964, she was an 18-year-old college dropout who moved to LA to join a folk-rock trio that rehearsed in a laundromat that had some great acoustics. What was the name of Linda Ronstadt's first band?

Correct Answer: The Stone Poneys
(Source)Their manager, Herb Cohen, once told guitarist Bobby Kimmel, "I can get your chick singer recorded, but I don't know about the rest of the group." The Stone Poneys signed with Capitol in 1966, but when it came time to record their biggest hit, "Different Drum," Kimmel and Kenny Edwards were banned from the studio. Ronstadt showed up without a lyric sheet, couldn't read music, and nailed it in two takes. The song climbed to #13 on the Billboard Hot 100. The band first heard it on the radio at a gas station after their car broke down on La Brea Avenue, which feels about right for a group already falling apart. They split within a year, and Ronstadt's solo career was one for the history books. Herb Cohen was a jerk, but he had excellent taste.
