Jackson patriarch Joe Jackson had been struggling to find a label that would sign his sons, and even some assistance from Gladys Knight couldn't get Motown to offer them a deal. Berry Gordy was done with child acts after all the headaches from managing Stevie Wonder. Meanwhile, Gordon Keith, who had founded Steeltown Records in Gary, Indiana, in 1966, kept seeing flyers advertising a young group called the Jackson Five Plus Johnny. Keith was intrigued by how frequently these signs appeared and signed the Jackson Five to a six-month management and recording contract in November 1967. Their first single, "Big Boy," was released on January 31, 1968. It wasn't a massive hit, but it got radio play around Chicago and Gary. A few months later the boys opened for Bobby Taylor & the Vancouvers. Taylor was so impressed with the family he dragged them to Detroit for a proper Motown audition, and when Berry Gordy finally watched that tape, he forgot all about his "no more kids" rule and signed them immediately. The Jackson 5's first Motown album "Diana Ross Presents The Jackson 5" told everyone that Supremes superstar Diana Ross had discovered the group, but that was pure marketing by Gordy.
