"E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" had already conquered movie theaters when someone looked at Spielberg's tearjerker and saw dollar signs in a completely different format. It was going to be a full production with music, sound effects, and a celebrity voice that could make parents and kids alike forget they weren't watching the actual movie. Once Quincy Jones joined the project as the mastermind, it unlocked a roledex of talent who could make this more than just a celebrity reading a bedtime story. Jones wanted to create an experience that would compete with the movie itself, complete with John Williams' original score woven throughout. When Jones approached Michael Jackson, the timing was perfect since Jackson was already obsessed with the E.T. character after doing a photo shoot with one of the movie's animatronic puppets. During recording, Jackson got so wrapped up in the story that when they reached the part where E.T. appears to die, he broke down crying right there in the booth. Jones and Spielberg heard the playback and realized those genuine tears were perfect, so they kept Jackson's emotional breakdown in the final cut. The audiobook earned Jackson a Grammy for Best Recording for Children in 1984, and even though he collected a record-setting eight Grammys that night, he told reporters this project was the one that meant the most to him.
