When did Queen Elizabeth II take the throne?

For generations, Queen Elizabeth II endured as a royal icon. Take pretty much anyone in the world over the last several decades and show them a picture of her, and they'd probably know who she was. Not a lot of people can say that.

Through multiple wars, royal weddings, and plenty of scandals, Elizabeth basically had one really bad year — as she called it, her annus horribilis — but for the most part enjoyed plenty of popularity in the UK and beyond.

Considering she was a fixture of popular culture for so long, it's hard to remember her ever not being queen. What year did she ascend to the throne?
