What year does the sequel to "2001: A Space Odyssey" take place?

Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" ends with Dave Bowman getting sucked through a psychedelic wormhole and turning into some kind of space baby, and that's not even a spoiler because you'll still finish the movie wondering "what the hell just happened?" The 1968 film was based on short stories by Arthur C. Clarke, who also collaborated with Kubrick on both the screenplay and a novelization of the film. That's where Kubrick's involvement ended, but Clarke was only just getting started. He'd go on to publish three more books, and Hollywood adapted one. What year does this sequel to "2001: A Space Odyssey" take place?

Correct Answer: 2010
(Source)Director Peter Hyams was given the tasks of both following up Kubrick's work and answering all of the questions he left audiences with in the first film. "2010: The Year We Make Contact" stars Roy Scheider as Dr. Heywood Floyd, who gets the worst assignment in NASA history. He's got to fly to Jupiter with a bunch of Russians during the Cold War to investigate a spaceship where an AI murdered everyone. Yes, the Discovery One is still floating out there like the universe's most expensive haunted house, complete with HAL probably still muttering about mission priorities in the dark. Hyams, who was given a blessing by Kubrick and Clarke, set out to close as many loose ends as he could. That might not sound interesting if you enjoyed the open-endedness of the first film, but it actually worked pretty well.
