It's hard to imagine a time when the world didn't stop completely just to see what Doritos will do for their next commercial, but there is indeed a threshold in time before which the Super Bowl was not played. Back then, people didn't even reference the game's viewership — in fact, it took some time before the Super Bowl started to do better than regular TV shows.
