When someone says, "You're like the Robin to my Batman," you should run.
That's because things don't typically turn out that well for Batman's perennial kid sidekicks. But in return for all that sacrifice, Robin is the prototypical sidekick and the one who honestly put sidekicks in general on the map.
Robin first appeared in 1940, in Detective Comics #38. With Batman being such an emo loner, he needed someone he could talk to, according to creators Bob Kane and Bill Finger.
