In which city was the Declaration of Independence signed?

Last updated: July 4, 2025

The summer of 1776 was hot, sticky, and absolutely brutal, but the Continental Congress pressed on. They were preparing the ultimate breakup letter for King George III, which would either make them founding fathers or get them all hanged for treason. In which city did these future presidents and historical legends gather to sign the Declaration of Independence?

Correct Answer: Philadelphia

Philadelphia had been the de facto capital of the rebellious colonies, so it was only fair to make our independence official inside its city limits. The Continental Congress had been meeting in Independence Hall (previously the Pennsylvania State House) since 1775, and it's the same spot where they'd hammer out the Constitution a few years later. It was there that John Hancock famously signed his name so large that King George could "read it without his spectacles." Almost 15 years later, Washington D.C. popped up from the Potomac River to take away Philly's congressional star.
