Neil Diamond’s live album "Hot August Night" was recorded at which venue?

Last updated: December 9, 2025

All of those perfectly crafted studio takes can't cover for an artist once they're live on stage. Luckily for Neil Diamond, that was never a problem. In fact, most fans and critics would argue he actually sounds *better* on his live albums. Take "Hot August Night," the massive double live album that topped year-end sales charts and is still considered one of the best live albums. Which venue hosted Diamond for his "Hot August Night" live album?

Correct Answer: The Greek Theatre

Diamond had already recorded "Gold: Recorded Live at the Troubadour" at the intimate Hollywood club, but by 1972 he'd finally scored two #1 hits of his own with "Cracklin' Rosie" and "Song Sung Blue." It was time to show off his live performance chops to a much bigger audience, so he booked 10 shows at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles that all sold out. He chose to record the seventh show, which feels like the sweet spot after the opening night nerves but before you're exhausted. He brought a full orchestra and put together this epic 24-song set that covered his whole career. The result was an album that electrified not just his fan base, but all of Australia, which loved it so much it became the best-selling album in the country for the entire 1970s. The Greek Theatre became Diamond's second home after that, and he recorded three more live albums at the venue.
