King Ding Dong is a mascot for which snack-cake brand?

The 1970s gave us a cartoon mascot for every sugary snack imaginable. We had cowboys, ship captains, magicians, and yes, royalty. King Ding Dong wore a crown and carried a scepter while presiding over his own chocolate kingdom, and the commercials had a gimmick where only children could see him. If you're struggling to remember what this guy looks like, congratulations on paying taxes. Which snack-cake brand is King Ding Dong a mascot for?
▼
Correct Answer: Hostess
(Source)Depending on where you grew up, you might remember him as King Don or even Chief Big Wheel. That last version wore a Native American headdress instead of a crown, which tells you everything you need to know about 1970s marketing. Hostess hired the same animator who brought you "Frosty the Snowman" and worked on "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" to bring its snack cake to life. Animator Don Duga was actually responsible for most of the Hostess Gang, including Twinkie the Kid, Captain Cupcake, and Happy Ho Ho. The commercials suggested that maybe, just maybe, adults could see King Ding Dong if they took a bite of a Ding Dong. Consider this your excuse to grab one and find out.
