Quentin Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction" shocked the movie world in 1994 with its twisted timeline, wickedly quotable dialogue, and the resurrection of John Travolta's career. The film turned heads from the moment it hit screens, but it wasn't just audiences who were blown away. There was one prestigious international gathering where the movie made its biggest impression, earning the top honor that would launch it toward worldwide fame and cultural immortality. Which film festival awarded "Pulp Fiction" its highest prize?

Correct Answer: Cannes Film Festival

Producer Lawrence Bender and Quentin Tarantino figured "Pulp Fiction" would win some kind of prize for best ensemble at Cannes. But as the night went on and the smaller awards were announced, the duo started realizing they might actually take home the top prize of the night, the Palme d'Or. The smart money at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival was on Krzysztof Kieslowski's "Three Colors: Red," but when jury president Clint Eastwood walked out to read the card, the winner was "Pulp Fiction." Eastwood said the film arrived when the festival desperately needed some energy, and the victory transformed Tarantino's $8.5 million indie into a cultural phenomenon that became the first Miramax movie to cross $100 million at the box office. But not everyone loved the decision, with one member of the Cannes audience screaming about how Kieslowski should have won and that "Pulp Fiction" was terrible. Tarantino responded in maybe the most Tarantino way possible with a laugh, a middle finger, and then moved on.
