Samus is the main character in which video game series?

Nintendo's '80s heroes have simple resumes. Mario eats mushrooms and saves a princess. Link swings a sword and saves a princess. Samus survives a space pirate raid that orphaned her, gets adopted by a race of giant cosmic birds, and ends up with alien DNA spliced into her own. Okay, maybe not every hero. Samus Aran is the main character in which video game series?
▼
Correct Answer: Metroid
(Source)At least when Link didn't get top billing in his own video game, it was still named after the princess he set out to save. Samus Aran's series is named after the Metroids, those freaky, evil jellyfish you spend the entirety of the game hunting. Nintendo also spent the entire marketing budget on gaslighting the player into thinking Samus was a man, and went so far as to use he/him in the game's manual. Back then, you only found out about the twist if you had the skills needed to beat the game in under five hours. There was an extra special reveal if you won in less than an hour, but that's not for me to spoil.
