What was Disney’s first PG-rated film?

Last updated: December 22, 2025

These days, Disney owns half of Hollywood and puts out everything from Marvel blockbusters to edgy streaming shows. But back in the "Star Wars" era, the studio was genuinely struggling to stay relevant because families saw them as strictly for little kids. Which film earned Disney its first PG rating?

Correct Answer: The Black Hole

For 11 years after MPAA ratings launched, Disney was the expert at releasing G-rated films. They were so good at it that even when they tried to shake off their squeaky clean image with "The Black Hole," they failed. The film originally got a G rating, so they added curse words like "damn" and "hell" and kept a violent death scene with spinning robot blades to make sure they got that PG. Even the Disney logo got the axe when they used "Buena Vista Productions" so audiences over 18 wouldn't dismiss it as another kids movie.

Disney spent $26 million hoping to capture some of that "Star Wars" magic with robots that were obviously meant to be their version of R2-D2. When "The Black Hole" opened it made a little over $35 million, which wasn't the "Star Wars" money they wanted, but it gave them the edgier reputation they desperately needed.
