Every time I’m reminded that Blade Runner came out in 1982, it blows my damn mind.
Not only are the visual effects pretty incredible for when it came out (or any time, really), it’s moody and dark in a way that totally sets it apart from anything else being done at the time. And sure, Neuromancer would help to develop cyberpunk as we know it, but Blade Runner defined it — and it came out two years before William Gibson’s book.
Ridley Scott’s vision of the future is bleak, neon, and somehow familiar. But just how far in the future is it supposed to be?

The answer is: 2019. Ridley Scott’s loose-ish adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s iconic novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, takes place in Los Angeles in the far-flung future of 2019. In fairness, that was a full 37 years in the future when the movie came out. Denis Villeneuve's aptly titled follow-up, Blade Runner 2049, takes place in, you guessed it, 2049.Source
