Question
Back to the Future Part II publicity still

Which company made the sneakers with "power laces" in "Back to the Future Part II"?

Last updated: January 8, 2026

"Back to the Future Part II" showed us a 2015 with flying cars, hoverboards, and self-drying jackets. And while all of that was really cool, it was the self-tying (technically they were self-tightening) shoes Marty McFly slipped on that made it onto every kid's wish list. Which company made the high-top shoes with the power laces in "Back to the Future Part II"?

Correct Answer: Nike

I hate to be the person to spoil the movie magic, but those shoes were fake. Michael J. Fox had a battery pack strapped to his back with wires running down his legs to power the lights, and stagehands crouched under the stage floor pulling the laces through holes. Nike designer Tinker Hatfield, the guy who created the Air Jordan III, came up with the look, but the technology to make them actually work didn't exist. That didn't stop tens of thousands of fans from signing petitions telling Nike to figure it out.

In 2005, Nike got serious about trying to bring them to life. On October 21, 2015, the exact date Marty traveled to in the film, Fox was handed the very first pair of fully-functional Nike Mags, which makes sense since he's the one who sold the dream back in 1989.
