Who is the only actor to win an Oscar for portraying a U.S. president?

We've been putting presidents on film for as long as we've had film. "The Birth of a Nation" featured Abraham Lincoln back in 1915, and once the Oscars came along, actors saw presidential roles as a path to gold. Who is the only one to actually win?
▼
Correct Answer: Daniel Day-Lewis
(Source)The gravitas that comes from playing a U.S. president should make it an easy path to Oscar gold. Anthony Hopkins was nominated twice for playing two different presidents in two different movies but didn't win either time. Out of the nine nominations since 1940, Daniel Day-Lewis' portrayal of Abraham Lincoln is the only one that converted to a win. He won Best Actor for Spielberg's 2012 "Lincoln" and committed to the role so hard that even Spielberg had to call him "Mr. President" for three straight months on set.
