Anthony Hopkins was nominated twice for playing two different presidents in two different movies but didn't win either time. Out of the nine nominations since 1940, Daniel Day-Lewis' portrayal of Abraham Lincoln is the only one that converted to a win. He won Best Actor for Spielberg's 2012 "Lincoln" and committed to the role so hard that even Spielberg had to call him "Mr. President" for three straight months on set.
