Which male actor has the most Oscar acting nominations?

Last updated: May 7, 2026

Oscar night remembers the winners, but nominees can hold records of their own, too. Peter O'Toole is the most nominated male actor who never won a competitive Oscar. Luckily for the actual most-nominated male actor, he has at least a few trophies on his shelf. Which male actor has the most Oscar acting nominations?

Correct Answer: Jack Nicholson

The record was set in 2003 with a dramedy about a widowed Nebraska insurance man on a Winnebago road trip to his daughter's wedding. Jack Nicholson's "About Schmidt" was his twelfth and final nomination, capping a 33-year run that kicked off with "Easy Rider" in '69. Three turned into wins, with Best Actor for "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and "As Good as It Gets" plus Best Supporting for "Terms of Endearment." His 12 nominations tie him with Katharine Hepburn, who took four wins from the same dozen.
