Which famous musician's body was stolen and burned in the desert?

Musicians are notorious for their hard-partying lifestyle, spending months on the road, and generally pushing their bodies to the brink. For many, they unfortunately and tragically push themselves beyond that brink.
Too many have passed away far too young, well before they were done sharing their talent with the world. But we kind of give them a pass — hey, they're musicians, that's just how they are. Yet for all the hardest of hard partiers that have ever stepped on the stage, I doubt any can say they had a wilder time after they passed than this person.
In one of the wildest stories you'll ever hear, a popular musician's body was indeed once stolen, taken to the desert, and burned (in an attempt at amateur cremation). Who was it?

Correct Answer: Gram Parsons
The answer is: Gram Parsons. Back in the early '70s, it was apparently not that hard to get the authorities to release a body to you — all it took for Phil Kaufman and Michael Martin was to show up in a hearse and act like they knew what they were doing.According to the pair, Parsons had told them he wanted to be buried in Joshua Tree, and they were simply honoring his wishes. The remains were later recovered and returned to the family, with the duo having to pay for all associated costs, but never serving any kind of jail time.Source
