Who is credited for coming up with "15 minutes of fame"?

Last updated: October 20, 2025

Nothing captures our obsession with fleeting celebrity like the phrase "15 minutes of fame." Whether it's a viral TikTok star, a reality TV contestant who flames out after one season, or someone who becomes a meme for a week, we've all witnessed how quickly fame can come and go in our hyperconnected world. The expression has become so embedded in our language that it feels like ancient wisdom. Who is credited for coming up with this perfectly prophetic phrase?

Correct Answer: Andy Warhol

(Source)

Andy Warhol gets all the credit, and that's about where all of the certainty ends. Did he come up with the saying? That's... less certain. The first record of it being attributed to Andy Warhol was in a 1967 Time magazine piece about sculptor Tony Smith, where they quoted Warhol predicting a day when everyone would be famous for exactly 15 minutes. The version most people know appeared the following year in a catalog for Warhol's Swedish art show, tweaked to sound even more quotable. I'm going to actually go out of my way to recommend checking out today's trivia source if you're interested in reading more. Written by Warhol biographer Blake Gopnik, it's a pretty comprehensive guide to the various origins of the quote (and its many forms). Regardless of who actually first said it, we all decided it was Warhol, and he took full advantage of it. He even had a show on MTV called "Andy Warhol's Fifteen Minutes."
